(31 Jan 2017) LEADIN: A Syrian soap maker is making his prestigious product from a factory just outside Paris. Hassan Harastani's business in Aleppo was bombed but a client persuaded him to move to France and reopen. STORY-LINE: The Arabic stamp is a clue to where this product comes from. Aleppo soap is a traditional and prestigious export long-produced in Syria. But these bars are no longer made there. Hassan Harastani's factory used to produce 250 tonnes of soap every year. But the facility was bombed - he doesn't know who by - and the master soap maker left the country. Harastani originally fled to Lebanon, but a French client suggested he move to France and open a new factory here in Santeny, 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) south east of Paris. He says the process has remained very similar. "The only difference is that in Aleppo, the hot soap dough is poured on the ground and then it is manually cut and here it is poured into moulds." Harastani set up his French operation in 2014 and now produces 900 bars of soap a year - close to the amount he made back in Syria. Olive oil and bay laurel oil are still key ingredients - the olive oil is imported from Tunisia and Span while the bay laurel oil comes from Turkey. "There is no major difference between the olive oil from Syria or from Tunisia; it is the same type of oil and we chose the best one (available)," he says. Samir Constantini is the French importer who has made this new factory possible. In the early years of the Syrian war, he didn't think the conflict would last long. He ordered 100 tonnes of Aleppo soap in 2012 - but the fighting did not stop. So persuading his long-time soap supplier and friend Harastani to set up shop in France has meant he can still sell this popular cosmetic product. And there are some distinct benefits in making the soap here rather than in Syria. "In some countries, like in the USA or Canada where there has been an embargo in place for a long time (for products from) Syria, we can sell only the soap 'Made in France'," he explains. "There are also Asian countries that like a lot of 'Made in France' products, and the fact that the soap is made in France is a proof of quality." Constantini is still able to offer soap made in Syria as he has found another supplier who continues to manufacture the product. But he is happy to give customers the choice of French-made soap. He insists it is "at least the same quality" as Aleppo-produced soap due to France's strict cosmetic standards. The soap is most popular with French customers and takes pride of place on display at this pharmacy in Creteil. Pharmacy manager Said Sedaime is satisfied that French-made Aleppo soap is a good replacement for the Syrian bars he can no longer get hold of. "The packaging is the same, even the smell is the same as from the soaps I was receiving couple of years ago from Aleppo," he says. Aleppo's factories may have been forced to shut, but at least the knowledge and skills that made them famous live on.
