From 2012 to late 2016, half of Syria’s second largest city, Aleppo, was occupied by numerous terrorist factions, by the Free Syrian Army, ISIS and finally dominated by Jabat al Nusra – who took over many areas including the eastern side of the city. The damage to East Aleppo is immense, and despite the level of destruction some residents are beginning to return to liberated areas now secured by the Syrian government to try and rebuild their homes, businesses and lives. (31 Jan 2017) LEADIN: A Syrian soap maker is making his prestigious product from a factory just outside Paris. Hassan Harastani's business in Aleppo was bombed but a client persuaded him to move to France and reopen. STORY-LINE: The Arabic stamp is a clue to where this product comes from. Aleppo soap is a traditional and prestigious export long-produced in Syria. But these bars are no longer made there. Hassan Harastani's factory used to produce 250 tonnes of soap every year. But the facility was bombed - he doesn't know who by - and the master soap maker left the country. Harastani originally fled to Lebanon, but a French client suggested he move to France and open a new factory here in Santeny, 30 kilometres (18.6 miles) south east of Paris. He says the process has remained very similar. "The only difference is that in Aleppo, the hot soap dough is poured on the ground and then it is manually cut and here it is poured into moulds." Harastani set up his French operation in 2014 and now produces 900 bars of soap a year - close to the amount he made back in Syria. Olive oil and bay laurel oil are still key ingredients - the olive oil is imported from Tunisia and Span while the bay laurel oil comes from Turkey. "There is no major difference between the olive oil from Syria or from Tunisia; it is the same type of oil and we chose the best one (available)," he says. Samir Constantini is the French importer who has made this new factory possible. In the early years of the Syrian war, he didn't think the conflict would last long. He ordered 100 tonnes of Aleppo soap in 2012 - but the fighting did not stop. So persuading his long-time soap supplier and friend Harastani to set up shop in France has meant he can still sell this popular cosmetic product. And there are some distinct benefits in making the soap here rather than in Syria. "In some countries, like in the USA or Canada where there has been an embargo in place for a long time (for products from) Syria, we can sell only the soap 'Made in France'," he explains. "There are also Asian countries that like a lot of 'Made in France' products, and the fact that the soap is made in France is a proof of quality." Constantini is still able to offer soap made in Syria as he has found another supplier who continues to manufacture the product. But he is happy to give customers the choice of French-made soap. He insists it is "at least the same quality" as Aleppo-produced soap due to France's strict cosmetic standards. The soap is most popular with French customers and takes pride of place on display at this pharmacy in Creteil. Pharmacy manager Said Sedaime is satisfied that French-made Aleppo soap is a good replacement for the Syrian bars he can no longer get hold of. "The packaging is the same, even the smell is the same as from the soaps I was receiving couple of years ago from Aleppo," he says. Aleppo's factories may have been forced to shut, but at least the knowledge and skills that made them famous live on. 21WIRE Editor Patrick Henningsen goes on the ground in Syria to inspect the once beautiful and historic city, damaged from 5 years of war, and witness the painful first signs of rebuilding in this war-torn city. Before Syria's civil war, Aleppo was the country's largest city and its business hub. It's home to famous landmarks like the Baron Hotel, founded by an Armenian family in 1911. The hotel played host to kings, presidents and writers until it was forced to close its doors five years ago. And as Ben Said reports, despite being damaged by war, the hotel still hold reminders of Syria's past. Ben Said reports. The Syrian city of Aleppo has sadly received a lot of coverage recently due to the widespread destruction from years of civil war. In spite of this, the city is still one of the great architectural treasures of the Middle East, which has drawn travelers and scholars for centuries. When museum founder Charles Lang Freer visited Aleppo in 1908, he was delighted, writing on June 19 to his business partner Frank Hecker, “Aleppo is a charming surprise – a beautiful ancient city, and in every way more attractive than I had fancied.” Among the hundreds of photographs he collected of Asia and the Middle East are twelve lovely views in and around Aleppo. Likewise, the German scholar Ernst Herzfeld traveled many times to Aleppo during his decades of research and exploration in the Middle East. The extraordinary number of drawings, photographs, and research notes in the Herzfeld collection is an important repository for the study of the city’s architectural heritage, so imperiled by recent conflicts. In support of the people of Aleppo, this month we have combined selections from these two collections into a slide show, currently on display in the Arthur M. Sackler Gallery.

Now the ancient city lies in ruins, 70 percent of its population has fled, and those who remain live under siege. Rebel-held areas are under constant bombardment by barrel bombs — crudely improvised explosive devices that are dropped from government aircraft. As rebel and government forces struggle for total victory, VICE filmmaker Medyan Dairieh followed the volunteers of Aleppo's Civil Defense, a civilian rescue organization, who risk their lives daily as the first responders to government airstrikes in a city seemingly abandoned by the outside world. Those streets they look like a wasteland I stop and wonder, do we even care? They got no where to run home to, they got no one that they can call Their world is broken, only God knows how they're coping But we pretend that we can't see them The world turns and our hearts get colder What can I do I'm just a one man soldier? Carry on watching TV on the sofa Tell ourselves it'll soon be over Cos we were supposed to be there for them Lord, where did the Ummah go? They were crying out there for us But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo Knee deep in Aleppo Their sleeping in Aleppo.. Aleppo Aleppo Living.. (x2) I say these words so you can see, the Muslims dropped the ball. Those were all of our family, but we didn't wanna know.. How dare we fight bout issues concerning you & me Cos when that cookie crumbled, we had no unity But we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day Yes we gotta be willing to change, cos lord knows this will happen on another day But what's a change gonna do if it's not today When we ain't got time to stop and pray Meanwhile another home got bombed today.. But that's the life that they live their in Aleppo They're Knee deep in Aleppo They're sleeping in Aleppo.. Aleppo (x2) Gunshots every night in Aleppo Another plane in the sky in Aleppo Every day is a fight in Aleppo Oh oh oh, Aleppo Ya Allah send peace to Aleppo Let everyone eat in Aleppo We don't no screams from Aleppo Oh oh oh, Aleppo living.. || Word of appreciation goes to the Municipality of Craco (MT-IT), Craco Research and Craco Production for giving us an authorization and permitting us to use video-photograph of the website of Museum Scenographic Park of craco with Craco Card Gold issued by the Municipality of Craco. Drone footage captured scores of civilians returning to their homes in al-Sakhour and al-Shaar districts of eastern Aleppo, Saturday, after government forces liberated the neighbourhoods from militants. On Saturday, the Syrian Arab Army (SAA) officially managed to enter Al-Tall, a key suburb of rural Damascus, which had been also under militant control. Many civilians that fled Al-Tall during the war have returned home as pro-government forces set up several military checkpoints in to order to ensure the safety of the residents. Al-Tall was believed to be the last suburb northwest of Damascus that was under militant control.
